Consumer trends: The cycling boom

Cycling is booming…

There has been a cycling boom since the start of lockdown. The Department for Transport announced that since before the lockdown, weekday cycling has increased by 100% and weekend cycling by 200%[1] .

We wanted to find out how our UK panel feel about cycling in the current climate, 966 responded. To our members it was clear that there are plenty of benefits to cycling, the most common relating to health; 21% do it to keep fit, 19% to keep healthy and 14% to lose weight.

QuMind has 65+ markets (including UK) and over 100M respondents in our panel. You can self-serve access this or we can manage this for you.

Keeping fit and less cars are driving this boom

It is this desire to keep fit, and the reduced number of the cars on the road encouraged a greater number of people to try cycling for leisure as they felt much safer than usual:

“I didn’t go out cycling much before lockdown but since lockdown I have enjoyed going out on my bike with my son. It is great for spending time with my son and we love cycling around the fields finding new things and ways to go. Also, it helps you to keep fit and lose weight so it’s a win, win!”

“We’ve started cycling a lot more as a family during the pandemic and really enjoyed going out and exploring. I think as the traffic is lighter on the roads, it feels much safer.”

More work is still needed to get even more people cycling…

However, 63% of our members choose not to cycle and this is often related to safety, particularly as road traffic begins to return to normal. Key fears relate to cycling on busy roads, encountering dangerous drivers and accidents due to potholes – there is often a desire to see more cycle lanes:

“I live in a large village which borders countryside but unfortunately the road that separates the two is a very busy one and I wouldn’t feel safe cycling on it, there are far too many lorries and cars and the air quality is not great. I have seen motorists overtake and the gap in between has been so small it must have scared the cyclist to death, this is not helped by the fact that we do not have a cycle lane.”

“I used to have a bike, but now take the bus to work. I have been thinking about getting a bike again, but it is the safety issue that is putting me off. I don’t feel there are enough cycling friendly routes currently in the area for me to justify getting a bike.“

Cycling infrastructure is key

Now that the government have announced its £2billion package to improve cycling and walking infrastructure, it may be the case that cycling becomes more common. However, without this extra safety net, we are still a long way off from cycling being the new normal.
