Consumer Health/ Self-Care Trends: The Rise of Home Exercise

Consumer Health/ Self-Care Trends: The Rise of Home Exercise

How habits change and the rise of positive change, during the lockdown period has been one of the highlights we have seen in our latest wave of tracking the mood of the nation. As the lockdown continues, we see that many of us are becoming increasingly focused on the amount of exercise we can do, not only for health benefits, but also to improve our mental well-being. Encouragingly we see that 3 in 5 of us have got back into or have taken up some form of exercise in the past few weeks.

Some of the most common ways of getting back into it have been through outdoor activities such as walking, running, and cycling.

“I’ve been cycling about town mostly, rather than walking. Dual purpose, it helps me get about quicker and means that I am social distancing more”

“Walking a lot more, doing up to 10km a day. I used to work 3 days a week and usually got to about 10,000 steps”

“As I was used to riding my bike to and from work everyday I am still riding my bike for my hours exercise”

The biggest phenomena we have seen are those who are motivated enough to take-up exercise in the home, often through watching YouTube videos. Not only YouTube but many apps now make workouts more available or free to take-up exercise such as yoga (12%), weight training (8%) and Zumba (7%) to name a few:

“I have started doing online yoga twice a week and walking around 2-3 miles every day. This is a big increase as I was doing no exercise at all and felt very lazy. I used to do a yoga class last year but stopped after I was busy doing other things and poorly motivated to attend”

“It can be daunting starting to exercise but there are so many free apps for exercising at home, without the need for any equipment. They can have different levels so you can start off easy and build up as you want to. Have a look and see what is suitable for you”

“I am usually a member of a Health Club and attend a few classes each week. At the moment, I do the Joe Wicks exercise session each morning, then line dancing online with my instructor and some days Zumba and meditation sessions with my Health Club instructor- I’m probably doing more exercise than usual without leaving the house!”

As the lockdown starts to ease and some form of normality resumes it will be interesting to see whether home training becomes a normal part of people’s lifestyles in the future.
