Can there be positives from the current lockdown?

QuMind communities share what UK consumers think are the silver linings from the lockdown.

These are definitely challenging times for all. After exploring different angles of the experience during the Covid-19 crisis on our ‘Quali’bus, from spending habits to beauty care, this week we have chosen to focus on the positives of the lockdown, those silver linings that give us hope.

The lockdown has prompted people to reassess their lives and what is important in the grand scheme of things. Top of the pile is a greater appreciation of the importance of family and friendship ties. Being apart is hard, but people are using technology to keep in touch (15% are using Zoom to connect with family). So it is physical distancing rather than social distancing that we have to endure. The need for social connections is heightened with several mentions on communities coming together and references to appreciation of kindness, family and neighbourly ties.

“I’ve finally passed my phone number to my neighbours (after 8 years), so that they can call or text if they need anything”

We see people, whose situation allows them to do so, looking after themselves and trying to do things that please them, from spending more time in the garden to reading to upskilling [5% have recently subscribed to a self-learning platform since the lockdown started].

Most of us probably have a long list of things to do which we were never able to get round to. The lockdown presents an opportunity to tick a few things off the list, with lots of mentions of spring cleaning, DIY, sorting through piles of paperwork or photos.

So silver linings are there, and people grasp on the hope that we will come better at the other end of it. If there is anything we can take from this, it will be a greater appreciation of what and who is important in our lives, in society. At the same time, as people are trying to keep their hands and minds occupied and stay strong and positive, they crave for the time when they can be free to go out and enjoy the old freedoms.

“This situation has made me realise how precious my freedom is to me and how much I have taken it for granted’”

Visiting a restaurant or pub/bar, seems to be the thing most people have missed and are looking forward to when all this is a dim and distant memory.
